State and county health officials have found no evidence to connect contamination from Fort Detrick with incidences of cancer in people living within one to two miles from the Army installation.

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Frederick County Health Department released a summary of its findings in a joint press conference Tuesday night, following a yearlong investigation into cancer concerns from resident who live near the fort.

The report used data collected from the Maryland Cancer Registry from 1992-2008. The registry, which is maintained by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, began collecting incidents of all new cancers in the state in 1982, but hospitals and laboratories were not required to report new cases until 1991.

"We didn't see any significant spike in cancer clusters," said Clifford Mitchell, director for Environmental Health and Food Protection at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
