Energy Hearing Takes Ugly Turn Defense Communities 360 March 29, 2012In a House hearing Thursday largely focused on the merits of the Defense Department’s efforts to develop alternative fuels, the military's campaign to acquire a greater share of its facility energy from renewable sources also came under fire. Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), chairman of the House Armed Services' Readiness Subcommittee, scheduled the hearing, What is the Price of Energy Security: from Battlefields to Bases, to review DOD’s energy priorities. His opening statement said he supported the military’s initiatives to diversify its fuel supply, but also revealed that he had a number of questions about the Navy's proposed $70 million investment in biofuel. "I have serious concerns about DOD investments that seek to advance markets and develop technologies that are not a core defense competency and may not demonstrate a reasonable rate of return," according to his prepared statement. ...
