No proof tainted Shannon well caused cancer, judge rules BY KEVIN DOUGHERTY Montreal Gazette (Que.) June 22, 2012Justice Bernard Godbout has ruled in a class-action suit that the townspeople of Shannon, north of Quebec City, did not prove their contention that the presence in their drinking water of TCE, a solvent used on the nearby Valcartier army base to clean artillery and ammunition and a known carcinogen, was responsible for abnormally- high cancer rates in the town. But Godbout did rule that contamination of well water in Shannon by trichloroethylene was an inconvenience to residents, ordering the government to pay compensation of $15,000 to about 300 affected residents who were among the 2,700 present and former residents lending their name to the class-action suit. That would mean damages of $4.5 million, far short of the $200 million to $300 million in damages lawyer Charles Veilleux, who resigned from his law firm to lead the court battle, hinted the class- action could yield. ...
