For Immediate Release: October 10, 2012 ' Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources' ' 'UNDERWATER UNEXPLODED ORDNANCE (UXO) DEMOLITION OPERATIONS PLANNED OFFSHORE MALAEKAHANA STATE RECREATION AREA LA'IE, HAWAI'I In the interest of public safety, unexploded ordnance (UXO) technicians working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in coordination with the State of Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources, will be conducting controlled underwater UXO demolition off the coast of Malaekahana State Recreation Area on Thursday, October 11, 2012. ' ...The UXO were discovered during a remedial investigation conducted by the Corps on the formerly used defense sites (FUDS) property called O'ahu target islands. The site consists of four small islands (Moku'auia, which is also known as Goat Island, Kihewamoku, Mokualai, and Pulemoku Rock) located between the communities of La'ie and Kahuku on the northeast shore of O'ahu. All four islands are uninhabited and lie in a two-mile stretch, less than a mile off the coast. ...
