Judge's ruling a win for Treasure Island development despite
radioactive material on island
Condominium project moves forward despite radiation cleanup concerns By KATHARINE MIESZKOWSKI and MATT SMITH Bay Citizen (CA) December 19, 2012A new Navy report says Treasure Island, shown here in 1957, was ground zero for repairing, scrapping, recycling and incinerating material from ships that might have absorbed radiation from atomic bomb tests in the Pacific. Plans to build an 8,000-unit condominium community on the former Treasure Island Naval Station have moved closer to reality following a judge’s rejection of a suit claiming the developers had not adequately studied the project’s potential environmental impact. "We are pleased to have this challenge behind us," said Kofi Bonner, president of homebuilder Lennar Urban, a developer of the project. In June 2011, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved the project, which will also include office space, parks and hotels. Superior Court Judge Teri L. Jackson ruled on Friday that the project’s environmental impact report "provides sufficient analysis to intelligently consider the environmental consequences." ...
