Park's bombs litter slopes Yellowstone can’t say how many unexploded shells lie above Sylvan Pass, or how to find them. By Mike Koshmrl Jackson Hole News & Guide(WY) June 12, 2013 An untold number of dud artillery rounds litter the slopes of Yellowstone National Park’s Sylvan Pass but officials have no plan to find and safely detonate them as they prepare to continue their winter avalanche program. Yellowstone can’t say how many of the duds, capable of propelling deadly shrapnel hundreds of yards, lie on the slopes of 10,000-foot Hoyt and Avalanche peaks. The park has rejected contractors’ bids for demolition because of the high cost and difficulty in finding the unexploded shells. Avalanches have carried at least one live shell down to the highway, where it was found in the spring, an examination of park records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act shows.
