Complaint filed over unexploded ordnance in North Valley By SANJAY TALWANI Helena Independent Record (MT) June 16, 2013In the late 1940s and 1950s, the Montana Army National Guard fired thousands of projectiles into rangeland in the north Helena Valley, part of America’s Cold War military preparation. And since 1997, the Guard, through contractors, has removed thousands of items from the area, including about 160 of the potentially dangerous unexploded ordnances (UXOs). The Montana Department of Military Affairs has made various efforts, from mailers to open houses to school presentations and county commission meetings, to let the public know about UXOs and other items, their dangers, and ways to avoid them. But a longtime landowner in the area says the government hasn’t done enough. Chevalier Ranch Co., is arguing in court that attorneys for the state killed its own public outreach plan in the spring 2007 for fear of stoking public fears and liability for the government and has otherwise concealed facts and analysis about the UXOs from the public. ...
