Fire at new Army lab at Fort Detrick; building ventilated by 1 a.m.

(UPDATE: 9:15 a.m.) The smoke has settled after a two-alarm fire  
broke out at an under-construction Army lab on Fort Detrick Wednesday  
afternoon, garrison spokeswoman Lanessa Hill said.

Fire crews on Fort Detrick and responders from Frederick County were  
called to the new U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious  
Diseases around 2 p.m.
The blaze on the building's second-floor was extinguished around 2:15  
p.m., though smoke lingered throughout the day.

Hill said crews finished clearing the smoke and ventilating the  
building by 1 a.m. Thursday.

"The fire was out by 2:15 but it took until that long to get the  
majority of the smoke out," said Hill "It's a construction site and a  
containment lab so the walls are 18-inch concrete walls."

A working HVAC system is not yet installed in the building, making  
ventilation more difficult, she said.
