Air Force report: Biggs Airfield bunker radiation 7 times acceptable level By Diana Washington Valdez El Paso Times (TX) September 15, 2013 Radiation levels detected at an old Biggs Airfield bunker were nearly seven times higher than established acceptable safe levels, according to a U.S. military report obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. The U.S. Air Force Safety Center prepared the July 3 report for Fort Bliss titled, "Trip Report, Inspection of Former Air Force Weapons Storage Area (WSA), Biggs Army Airfield." During a site visit in June, the Air Force inspectors took alpha and beta particle readings in a storage igloo or bunker (Building 11507) with two devices, a Ludlum Model 2360 meter and a Ludlum Model 43-89 probe. They also conducted complex calculations, and applied estimates that the inspectors described as "conservative." … For the entire article, see http://www.elpasotimes.com/news/ci_24097994/air-force-report-radiation-contamination-at-biggs-bunker -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/military-cpeo.org | |
