 Study: No environmental clean-up needed at McDowell Grove

Former U.S. Department of Defense operations at what is now the  
McDowell Grove Forest Preserve in Naperville do not necessitate  
environmental clean-up, experts say.

While a study found chemicals in the groundwater, they were not  
caused by the DOD and are too deep to present a danger.

"It is unfortunate that there is TCE in the groundwater, but the  
(Forest Preserve District of DuPage County) and the U.S. Army Corps  
of Engineers have answered the Illinois Environmental Protection  
Agency's concerns," said Drew Bergenthal, environmental compliance  
manager for the district.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Illinois Environmental  
Protection Agency have been investigating the forest preserve site at  
Raymond Drive and McDowell Road as part of the federal Formerly Used  
Defense Sites program that cleans up areas where DOD activities may  
have caused contamination. In the 1940s, the forest preserve land was  
the site of the Camp McDowell Radar School.
