Former Griffiss AFB officially transferred to community

ROME -- With more than 100 members of the Air Force and local community in attendance, the last remaining facilities at the former Griffiss Air Force Base were officially transferred to the Rome community in a ceremony on Jan. 22. Through the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s realignment of facilities of Griffiss, the base is the 33rd to be transferred for community reuse.

“This is a milestone day,” said Dr. Stephen TerMaath, chief of the BRAC program management office at the Air Force Civil Engineer Center. “Griffiss demonstrated that BRAC does not have to be a word communities fear.”

Across the country, 50,000 jobs have been created on former Air Force bases and nearly 6,000 of those jobs are at Griffiss.
