RIALTO: $11 million perchlorate settlement reached by Janet Zimmerman Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) January 31, 2014An $11 million settlement was reached today, Jan. 31, between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the estate of a former fireworks manufacturer at a Rialto industrial site where toxic chemicals leached into the groundwater. The area was formerly known as the B.F. Goodrich Superfund site. The origin of the contamination is a 160-acre industrial parcel north of Interstate 210, between Alder and Locust avenues in Rialto. Beginning in the 1940s, chemicals were dumped on the ground or burned in pits. Over the years, the contamination made its way into underground water supplies. It wasn't until 1997, when testing became available to detect low levels of perchlorate - an ingredient in explosives - that water districts discovered the pollution. Friday's settlement is with the estate of Harry Hescox, late president of the now-defunct Pyrotronics, which manufactured fireworks at the site, EPA officials said. ...
