Local residents air concerns at Fort Detrick biosafety expo

Fort Detrick's research community took questions from a concerned  
public at the first Public Safety Expo and Open House, held Wednesday  
evening at Hood College.

About 50 local residents came to the event in the first two hours.  
The Containment Laboratory Community Advisory Committee sponsored the  
expo and invited local residents to come and ask Frederick County and  
Fort Detrick officials about their research labs and biosafety issues.

Lillian Herz, who has lived in Frederick since 1978, said she worries  
about the new U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious  
Diseases building, currently under construction.

"I can see it from my kitchen window," she said.

Herz said it is "a huge mistake" to build that facility because the  
pathogens and chemicals that could be held there may be released into  
the environment if disaster strikes.
