Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] REUSE: "Keep recreation area low-impact" at former Badger Ammo Plant (WI) |
Keep recreation area low-impact Editorial Baraboo News Republic: (WI) May 24, 2014 6:00 amAs one of the last examples of a large, open prairie in the state - some of it never plowed and left relatively undisturbed during its time as a military facility - the Sauk Prairie Recreation Area should be used for education and low-impact recreation. This approach would preserve the land as it is, or where necessary restore it to how it had been, for future generations. While hiking, cross-country skiing and biking activities should be welcomed - along with in-season hunting and other activities consistent with state lands - proposals for an all-terrain-vehicle trail or gun range are inconsistent with the best uses for the property. Located at the foot of the Baraboo Hills and so close to Devil's Lake State Park, the expansive grounds of the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant offer a great opportunity to expand the area's natural offerings and attract even more people to the region. This is a unique moment in history, as the future of the property remains undecided and people have a chance to weigh in on what they think should be done with the land. This weekend likely will be the last chance for residents to see the area in person before a decision is made. ...
