Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] ENERGY, ENCROACHMENT: Transmission line across White Sands Missile Range (NM) |
Compromise reached to allow SunZia line to be built on WSMR land Compromise gives OK to build By Steve Ramirez Las Cruces Sun (NM) May 27, 2014LAS CRUCES - A compromise has been reached on a proposal that would allow SunZia to construct an energy transmission line across a portion of White Sands Missile Range. U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., said Tuesday a resolution has been reached between the Department of Defense and the Bureau of Land Management that would require SunZia to bury five miles of its proposed transmission line underground. That would eliminate conflicts with military training and weapons testing that is conducted in WSMR's northern extension area. "(Tuesday's) resolution means that unparalleled military testing at White Sands Missile Range and a transformational clean energy infrastructure project can exist in harmony, and I commend the tremendous work done by the agencies involved to get to this point," said Heinrich in a news release. "White Sands Missile Range is a true national treasure that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else in the United States, and the SunZia transmission line will unlock the state's world class wind resources for clean energy production and export to hungry energy markets in the West. All the while, New Mexico stands to gain thousands of good-paying construction jobs." ...
