Environmental cleanup still delaying Letterkenny land transfer Loose ends from 1995 BRAC persist amid renewed closings talks By Jim Hook Chambersburg Public Opinion (PA) June 16, 2014 CHAMBERSBURG - The Pentagon and Congress are posturing over another round of base closings while loose ends are still being tied up from the round in 1995. About 150 acres have yet to transfer from Letterkenny Army Depot, 19 years after the Base Closure and Realignment Commission ordered it. Environmental cleanup has slowed the return of 1,160 acres, originally taken with 17,000 acres in 1941 for the repair and ammunition depot in Greene and Letterkenny townships. ... The 1995 BRAC originally ordered nearly 1,500 acres to be trimmed from Letterkenny's footprint. With the nation's later involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army asked to hold onto about 350 acres.
