EPA makes upbeat assessment on nuclear contamination from Parks
Township waste dump
By Mary Ann Thomas Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (PA) August 13, 2014Government officials outnumbered residents on Tuesday night at a meeting concerning environmental testing outside of the nuclear waste dump in Parks Township. The low turnout might be the result of the federal Environmental Protection Agency findings of no nuclear or chemical contaminants outside of the nuclear waste dump formally known as the Shallow Land Disposal Area. The dump was used by the former Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corp. (NUMEC) and its successor, the Atlantic Richfield Co., in the 1960s to the early 1970s. In 2011, the EPA started testing outside of the nuclear dump because of residents' concerns about potential contamination. The Army Corps of Engineers is leading an estimated 10-year cleanup of the dump that could cost as much as $500 million. ...
