Portsmouth, Air Force reach pact on tainted wells By Jeff McMenemy Seacoast Online (NH) October 3. 2014PORTSMOUTH - City officials have reached a memorandum of agreement with the U.S. Air Force concerning the contamination of a city well at Pease International Tradeport. Deputy City Attorney Suzanne Woodland states in a memo to City Manager John Bohenko that the Air Force has agreed to pay the city $154,000 for the initial costs to find a new water supply. The agreement followed the discovery in May of elevated levels of perofluorinated compounds (PFC), which the Environmental Protection Agency defines as a "contaminant of emerging concern" in the city- owned Haven Well. The city then immediately shut down the well. There are two other city-owned wells at the tradeport. The EPA classified perofluorinated compounds as contaminants of emerging concern "because the risk to human health … may not be known." ...
