Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] CLEANUP: "Keeping it clean at Beale AFB" (CA) |
Off Beat: Keeping it clean at Beale AFB by Harold Kruger Marysville Appeal-Democrat (CA) October 12, 2014 You really begin to wonder if they'll ever finish the cleanup of Beale Air Force Base. They're still at it. If you remember, back in the days before anybody cared about the environment, the Air Force had this nasty habit of dumping stuff at its bases. Just about anything that had to be disposed of was dumped wherever there was room. At Beale, formerly Camp Beale, there was plenty of room. So dump away. Well, the environmental thing kicked in a few decades ago, and suddenly the Air Force and other military branches were on the hook (actually, the taxpayers were) to clean up the mess left behind. At Beale, they're still working hard because there's plenty of groundwater out there, and that groundwater doesn't really recognize the confines of the federal property. … For the entire column, see http://www.appeal-democrat.com/opinion/off-beat-keeping-it-clean-at-beale-afb/article_6d658db2-51d3-11e4-bf21-0017a43b2370.html -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/military-cpeo.org | |
