Aggressive action overdue on Bethpage plume Editorial Long Island Newsday March 1, 2015 How long is 30 years? Long enough for a newborn to become a parent. Long enough for nearly eight presidential terms. But not long enough, apparently, to corral and clean the Northrop Grumman plume in Bethpage. It's an awful mess, and continues to get worse. For decades, groundwater contamination has been spreading from the defense manufacturing facility once operated by Grumman and the U.S. Navy. The state Department of Environmental Conservation has been working with Grumman and the Navy to contain the plume and clean it.
