Wednesday Meeting Will Focus On Remaining Contamination At Westhampton Airport

Representatives of the State Department of Environmental Conservation will hold a public hearing on the evening of Wednesday, March 4, to discuss their plans to remove remaining contamination at the site of a former dog kennel at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton.

Soil samples from the site, located on the eastern edge of the airport that sits off Old Riverhead Road, showed high levels of polychlorinated biphenyl, commonly known as PCBs. DEC officials have stated that the site was used to bury inert wastes, such as office furniture, as well as electrical distribution equipment, including transformers and capacitors, when the former Air Force base was being deactivated in 1970.
