Twenty years ago, the unthinkable happened in Rome.

Griffiss Air Force Base - the central focus of the city since the 1940s - closed Sept. 30, 1995, two years after the federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission decided its fate.

Few could have imagined that the end of the Cold War, with the historic tearing down of the Berlin Wall, would have such a devastating impact on a local community.
