DOD: $5M needed to clean up Motlow Range by Kelly Lapczynski Tullahoma News (TN) October 18, 2015 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) hosted a public meeting Thursday night at Motlow College to detail its proposed plan to address munitions-related contamination identified within the former 7,528-acre defense site known as Motlow Range. Located west of Tullahoma, the Motlow Range was created in 1941 as an auxiliary training area for Camp Forrest, one of the U.S. Army’s largest training bases during World War II. With firing ranges for light artillery, mortars and machine guns, the area supported an anti-tank range, anti-aircraft range and various small arms ranges. The range was deactivated by the U.S. War Department and declared surplus in 1946. Since that time, multiple munitions removal actions have been conducted on the land, with sweeping efforts in the mid-50s through the mid-60s and again in the mid-90s through the mid-2000s. The current effort to determine the nature and extent of hazards that may remain is part of a U.S. military program created for assessment and environmental restoration. … For the entire article, see http://www.tullahomanews.com/dod-5m-needed-to-clean-up-motlow-range/ -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/military-cpeo.org | |
