Navy approves NAWC land transfer, but investigation continues

Despite ongoing efforts to remove toxic chemicals left behind after the closure of the Naval Air Warfare Center in Warminster, a portion of the land being eyed for a housing development has been cleared by the Navy for transfer, a Navy official said Wednesday.

News about the 50-acre property, known as Shenandoah Woods, came during a recent meeting of a committee organized by the Navy’s Base Realignment and Closure program to oversee ongoing cleanup efforts at the former base.

“The Shenandoah Woods property … was found to be suitable for transfer in September of 2015,” said Willie Lin, BRAC environmental coordinator for the site. “The Navy is working separately with the township on the transfer of that property.”

Steven Wiesner, Warminster's interim manager, said the township would need to sign off on the transfer before development could begin. He added that the township supervisors have voted to retain an independent environmental engineer from Pennoni Associates, of Doylestown, to advise on that decision.
