Air Force finds chemicals in groundwater near former Plattsburgh base by Zach Hirsch North Country Public Radio (NY) January 29, 2016 The groundwater near the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base is partially contaminated with chemicals from firefighting foam, according to officials with the Air Force Civil Engineering Center, which tested 29 water wells near the base late last year. Three wells were found to have higher than acceptable levels of pollutants known as perfluorinated compounds, or PFCs. Investigators are trying to figure out if the contamination is widespread. After the Plattsburgh Air Force Base closed 20 years ago, the Air Force removed old buildings, weapons, and other hazardous materials.
