Howell groundwater contaminated?

Homes and businesses near the Naval Weapons Station Earle Fire Training Center could be at risk for contaminants in private well water, according to U.S. Navy officials.

The Navy is conducting voluntary water testing for anyone with well water within a half-mile radius of the training center in the direction groundwater flows, said Bill Addison, a spokesman for the weapons station. The station is off Route 33 near Yellowbrook Road in Howell, adjacent to the Monmouth County Fire Academy.

Last year, Naval stations across the country started testing for perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), or man-made chemicals that have been used in household and industrial products because of their stain- and water-repellent properties, at sites where firefighting foam containing the chemical was used.
