Perchlorate found in wells at Virginia Tech's Kentland Farm

Virginia Tech recently found perchlorate and other substances in two wells at its Kentland Farm in Montgomery County — but at levels too low to trigger concern, findings released by the university said.

The well-testing follows several years of outcry by residents worried about pollution from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, which is located across the New River from Kentland Farm. The finding of low levels of perchlorate outside the plant follows last month’s discovery of the chemical in wells that supply two public drinking water systems operated by the Montgomery County Public Service Authority.

Lt. Col. Alicia Masson, commander of the Army-owned, contractor-operated ammunition plant, wrote in an email Wednesday that an earlier review had found that the plant was not affecting groundwater outside its boundaries. She noted that perchlorate, used in fertilizers, could be present in agricultural areas.
