Corps: Giving it contaminated landfill would not speed fix

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Efforts to resolve a burning suburban St. Louis landfill near buried radioactive waste will not be hastened if oversight of the project is shifted from federal environmentalists to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a top Corps official has argued.

Steven Stockton, the Corps' civil works director, wrote in a letter last week to Republican Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan that authority over the West Lake Landfill might best be left to the Environmental Protection Agency, not a Corps program created to handle radioactively tainted sites.

Federal legislation, including in the Upton-led House Committee on Energy and Commerce, seeks to put the landfill effort in the hands of the Corps' Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program.
