Gov. Kate Brown sets deadline after 'unacceptable' handling of toxic armories By Rob Davis Oregonian December 16, 2016 Calling an Oregon official's handling of lead in National Guard armories "absolutely unacceptable," Gov. Kate Brown said she has imposed a Jan. 31 deadline for the state to post test results and cleanup schedules online and in the buildings. Brown leveled the criticism against Roy Swafford, the Oregon Military Department's head of armory maintenance, during an interview with The Oregonian/OregonLive's editorial board. Under Swafford's watch, children visited two armories that inspections showed were full of lead dust. The Coos Bay armory hosted a sleepover for elementary school students in May 2015. Fifth-graders spread their sleeping bags on floors where high lead levels were routinely found. Children were also allowed at the Forest Grove armory for weeks after inspectors told Swafford and other Guard officials to keep the public out. ...
