The residents of Lakeside Estates could go for at least the next two years using bottled water as the mobile-home development owners have been resisting the installation of a free carbon filter on site, prompting the bewilderment of the Mashpee Board of Health.

During a hearing December 15 Douglas C. Karson, a community involvement leader with the Joint Base Cape Cod Air Force Civil Engineer Center, told the board the Air Force has offered to pay for and to install a carbon filter at the main well in Lakeside Estates, which would provide uncontaminated water to the approximately 70 families in the park, but Lakeside Estates manager Matthew Haney had said it would not be a solution.

Mr. Haney has until January 5 to respond to the Air Force’s recommendation; he has yet to do so.

William R. Haney Sr. is listed as the president of MEZ Realty Inc., the owners of the 28-acre mobile-home park, but town officials have said Mathew Haney, the son of William, runs the operation.

Mr. Karson told the board the development’s owners likely want the Air Force to pay for and install water pipes at the park instead of installing a filter; it could take at least two years to install pipes if the Air Force decides to pursue the municipal water tie-in.
