Schumer criticizes Defense Dept. for taking own water contamination tests By Leonard Sparks Middletown Times Herald-Record (NY) May 26, 2017 TOWN OF NEWBURGH – Sen. Charles Schumer railed against the Department of Defense on Friday for undertaking its own tests of contamination at Stewart Air National Guard Base instead of using state results showing the base is responsible for the toxic chemical found in the City of Newburgh’s main water supply. The military claims that its own soil and water samples are needed to confirm the presence and source of perfluorooctane sulfonate, or PFOS, at the base before an environmental cleanup can begin.
