Military messes: The Defense Department must clean up sites it polluted THE EDITORIAL BOARD Pittsburgh Post-Gazette July 5, 2017 The federal government should promote economic development, not impede it. It should set an example for environmental stewardship, not flout rules it wants others to respect. In a federal lawsuit, the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway alleges that the Defense Department has failed to clean up a 77-acre site in Jefferson Hills used during and after the Cold War to stockpile the raw materials needed for steel production. Now, the railway wants to use the land but can’t because of three ponds created there when the government hauled away the ore and generous amounts of topsoil to boot.
