Army pledges Merrimac Badger Ammunition cleanup help, will not fund drinking water system by AUTUMN LUEDKE WiscNews July 27, 2017 Residents living within reach of toxic groundwater pollution near the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant questioned Army officials Wednesday about their sudden abandonment of a proposed $20 million public drinking water system. Army representatives said they're committed to ensuring people living near the property have access to clean drinking water, but said an Army representative acted prematurely when committing to fund a public drinking water system for the residents. Army plans for a public drinking water system were discussed by the Army as early as 2010, but gained steam in the spring and summer of 2015 when the Army and U.S. Department of Agriculture petitioned the town of Merrimac to form a water district and governing board, while promising to pick up the $20 million construction tab. -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center P.O.
