Search underway for unexploded ordnance in waters off Fort Pickens by Melissa Nelson Gabrie Pensacola News Journal (FL) January 10, 2018 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is searching a 137,000-acre swath of the Gulf of Mexico off Fort Pickens for unexploded ordnance. Exploration of the Gulf and a portion of Pensacola Bay began this month and will continue through late April, said environmental consultant Susan Burtnett. The work is part of a national effort by the corps to find and dispose of old military ordnance that could pose environmental and safety hazards. Military operations took place on the western tip of Santa Rosa Island from 1828 through 1949. Ordnance from small arms and heavy artillery used throughout that time could be buried in the Gulf, said Burtnett, who works for the international design and consultant firm Arcadis.
