Chippewa County awarded brownfield grant for former Kincheloe Air Force Base Sault News (MI) August 4, 2018 A $45,000 brownfield redevelopment grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) will help the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) find new uses for vacant buildings at the Chippewa County International Airport (the former Kincheloe Air Force Base) in Kincheloe. The brownfield grant will help the Chippewa County EDC evaluate underutilized buildings on the property and determine environmental cleanup and asbestos abatement needs for future development. The Kincheloe Air Force Base was created by the United States Air Force for national air defense operations in the early 1940s and closed in the late 1970s.
