The Navy and the Washington state Department of Natural Resources have agreed to create a restrictive easement along Hood Canal's eastern shoreline with the goal of preventing encroachment upon military operations in the area while preserving threatened aquatic habitats.

The Navy has agreed to pay DNR $342,000, which is the appraised market value, to secure a 55-year easement for 32 miles of shoreline that runs south from the Hood Canal Bridge to Kitsap County's southern boundary at Chinom Point.

The 2,800-acre easement begins 18 feet from the shore and extends out 70 feet into the water, encompassing almost 2,500 acres of aquatic bedlands that are home to designated critical habitats, such as eelgrass communities and geoduck tracts.
