Antiquated underground sewer system failures caused Navy sewage spill by Julianne Stanford Kitsap Sun (WA) August 28, 2018 The failure of three separate antiquated underground systems in Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton's sewage system created a chain reaction that spilled thousands of gallons of wastewater into Sinclair Inlet earlier this month. The discharge contained gray water from sinks, laundry appliances and showers, and "other sources" - including a minimal amount of human waste from bathrooms - that leaked into the waterways during a two-week period, the Kitsap Public Health District estimated. The Navy's original projection placed the size of the spill at 80,000 gallons. Officials have updated the spill volume to 64,000 gallons "based on recent calculations of the failure mechanism and time frame indicators of when the failure happened," said Naval Base Kitsap spokesman Jake Chappelle. … For the entire article, see https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/news/local/2018/08/28/outdated-sewer-system-failures-caused-kitsap-naval-base-sewage-spill/1054709002/ -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center P.O.
