Campaign starts in Okinawa, centered on U.S. base relocation THE ASAHI SHIMBUN September 13, 2018 NAHA—The official campaign for the Okinawa gubernatorial election kicked off on Sept. 13 with a familiar topic--construction of a new U.S. military base--as the main bone of contention in the race. The election was called to replace Takeshi Onaga, the governor who died of cancer on Aug. 8 after staunchly opposing the central government’s plan to build the base in the Henoko district of Nago in the prefecture.
