Investigation of Pocasset contamination plume underway

POCASSET - Firefighters from Joint Base Cape Cod handled a couple of fuel fires from tanker truck rollovers at the Otis Rotary in 1997 and 2000 with a foam that is known to be effective when fuel is involved.

In each case, about 500 gallons of fuel were spilled, and cleanup at the rotary focused on removing fuel contamination.

At the time, perflourinated compounds known as PFOS and PFOA that were contained in firefighting foam had not yet been identified by the government as contaminants that could cause health problems.

The compound-laced firefighting foam went down the drains at the Otis Rotary and seeped into groundwater, where it has been traveling westward into the Pocasset area since the two accidents.
