Navy Base Cleanup Continues By Andy Long Newport This Week (RI) January 24, 2019 Navy officials presented a review of the ongoing environmental remediation efforts at Navy Station Newport on Jan. 16 and projected a 2026 end date for the project. Cecilia Landin, the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) project manager for the Newport cleanup effort, summarized the organization’s progress at a meeting of the Restoration Advisory Board (RAB), a consortium of local and state officials, and Aquidneck Island residents who advise the Navy. “We have 25 sites at Newport that have been identified [as contaminated]. Nine are closed [finished] and require no further funding appropriated for them,” she said. “There are 16 that are open. Six are undergoing investigation, which means we’re still trying to figure out what’s going on with them, identifying the risks.
