Bidding closes on Bedford’s Navy hangar

Someone has paid $9,040,000 for a former U.S. Navy property on Hartwell Road. An auction, which began in September and was paused during the 35-day federal government shutdown, was closed Friday, Feb. 1.

The 16-acre property went up for bid through GSA Auctions, the auction website, which handles surplus, forfeited, and other federal property. The offers on the aircraft maintenance property, from eight unnamed bidders, had risen from $500,000 on Sept. 4 to more than $8 million at the end of the year.

The hangar was built in 1959 for aircraft maintenance. The property, which is adjacent to Hanscom Airfield, housed radar equipment, administrative offices and laboratories. It includes a 95,949 square foot building, two aviation hangars, a three-story office building and a two-story addition with an open floor plan. It is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

The property was used by the Navy and the Raytheon Corporation as a testing facility for defense and weapons systems. The town conducted an assessment of the property and determined groundwater had been contaminated with the chemical TCE, a degreasing fluid, but the contamination is slightly below drinking water standard and would not be an issue of concern.
