Clean-up, restoration underway at IAAP By Michaele Niehaus The Hawk Eye (IA) March 24, 2019 MIDDLETOWN - Depleted uranium, RDX and TNT contamination are on their way to becoming things of the past for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. Much has changed in terms of how waste and environmental stewardship are managed at IAAP since it first began operations in 1940 as the Iowa Ordnance Plant, and efforts to remedy the non-regulated practices from the plant’s beginnings are evident today throughout the installation’s 19,000 acres, 5,000 of which are leased out for farmland. Munition production practices from the early 1940s into the late ’60s and early ’70s, when the Environmental Protection Agency was in its infancy, left RDX, TNT and other contaminants in the soil and groundwater.
