Joint Base Cape Cod officials wait on final PFAS rules

POCASSET - A draft rule to significantly lower the threshold for some contaminants known as per- and polyflouroalkyl substances, or PFAS, is being considered by state environmental regulators, but until the rule is finalized, which could take a year, Joint Base Cape Cod will follow the old standard for testing and response purposes.

PFAS compounds are found in many products, but one of the main sources across the country has been firefighting foams heavily used in training at military installations. PFAS can be released into the air, soil and water, including sources of drinking water.

Current limits for the compounds have been set by the federal Environmental Protection Agency at 70 parts per trillion, under a “lifetime health advisory,” rather than a formal standard.

Massachusetts is now looking at setting a formal rule that would reduce the threshold of contamination to 20 parts per trillion.
