The city of Tulsa has received a $500,000 brownfields grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to do asbestos abatement of 170,000 square feet of the Air Force Plant No. 3 building at Tulsa International Airport, the EPA announced Wednesday.

Brownfields are industrial or commercial properties that are abandoned or underused and have or potentially have environmental contamination that makes redevelopment difficult.

Air Force Plant No. 3 is 2.89 million square feet, 90 percent of which is occupied by businesses such as Nordam, Spirit AeroSystems and Navistar.
