Base’s Environmental Restoration Program works to clean up another former range by Charity Delaney, Environmental Engineer Camp Lejeune Globe (NC) June 7, 2019 Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune's Environmental Restoration Program has been working since the 1990s to conduct environmental investigations and cleanup, in partnership with the U.S. Navy, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. These agencies work together to come up with long-term, cost-effective clean up strategies with the goal of returning property to reusable land. Short- and long-term goals are always to protect human health and the environment, whether that be through various cleanup technologies and/or restricting land use. This includes prohibitions on digging or drinking groundwater. Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Site UXO-06 is a former training area for fortified beach assault used from 1953 to 1977. As a result of these activities, potential explosive hazards from remaining munitions are present and cleanup activities are currently being conducted.
