PFAS investigation will accelerate at long-closed Michigan military base

A verbal agreement to speed up the pace of work that should help control the spread of PFAS from the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base into nearby waterways follows more than a year of pressure from Michigan officials and community activists.

The announcement made July 1 says the U.S. Air Force agreed to multiple points raised in dispute resolution meetings.

The news prompts both state and local officials to say that it could be a significant sign of progress for a community that’s been confronting high levels of the chemicals for several years and waiting for a resolution.

“However,” said Arnie Leriche, “the devil’s going to be in the details.”
