Inside the biggest modular housing factory on the West Coast

Production of modular homes at Factory OS in Vallejo is ramping up after just a year-and-a-half of operating its assembly line.

With new investments and an expansion under way, the factory expects to quintuple its production from 1,000 to 5,000 units per year in the next three years.

Rick Holliday, longtime Bay Area housing builder, co-founded Factory OS two years ago to build modules that are made in the factory and then shipped to development sites. The advantage is of modular construction, he said, is that it can cut costs and speed up production times compared with traditional construction methods.

The company also leases 256,000 square feet of industrial space in Mare Island, a former naval shipbuilding facility in Vallejo that produced navy boats during World War II, and plans to expand into another 110,000 square feet next year.
