Devens Restoration Advisory Board provides update on groundwater remediation By JACOB VITALI | Lowell Sun (MA) June 8, 2021 DEVENS — The Restoration Advisory Board meeting centered around groundwater remediation efforts at the 84-acre Shepley’s Hill landfill site during its meeting in late May. The site is contaminated with arsenic and efforts to remove it from there and neighboring Plow Shop Pond have been underway for several years. Addressing the contamination is part of a larger ongoing cleanup effort at the former Army post, which the RAB was established to assist with. Currently, a pump and treat system is used to get dissolved arsenic and iron from the ground. A chlorine dioxide gas is then added to help produce a sludge-like material that is taken to a waste site. Dan Groher from the Army Corp of Engineers said that a pilot test will take place this summer for an alternative treatment plan known as In-Situ Air Sparging. The process involves injecting pressurized air into the contaminated groundwater, forcing the chemicals to change from a dissolved state to a vapor one, where they are then sent to a vacuum extraction system. … For the entire article, see https://www.lowellsun.com/2021/06/08/devens-restoration-advisory-board-provides-update-on-groundwater-remediation/ — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
