Camp Lejeune to issue warning letters to trespassers of hazardous Browns Island

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is cracking down on people who violate the laws and regulations restricting access to Browns Island, a high hazard impact area located north of Onslow Beach and south of Hammocks Beach State Park’s Bear Island.

Dating back to the 1940s, Browns Island served as a training area and has accumulated numerous unexploded ordnance (UXO). Just this past June, a 250-pound, World War II-era UXO was discovered and had to be disposed of by specialists. 

In order to increase community safety, the base announced last week that warning letters will be issued to individuals who trespass on the island, a violation that could result in jail time or a hefty fine. 

“This piece of ordnance was under water during high tide and was not visible from above the surface,” said GySgt. Christopher Guillory, explosive ordnance disposal operations chief, in a news release. “Any movement or jarring of the UXO, especially by boat or watercraft, could be enough to function and create a detonation.”
