Nevada Tribes Demand New National Monument Near Navy Firing Range

A coalition of four Native American tribes is pushing for the creation of a new national monument surrounding a Navy firing range in central Nevada to permanently protect the area’s cultural and natural resources. 

Two leaders of the Fallon Paiute Shoshone tribe this week met with senior Biden administration officials and members of Congress to outline their vision for a Numu Newe National Monument covering nearly 3 million acres of federal land that is the ancestral home of the Paiute and Shoshone peoples. “Numu” and “Newe” mean “the people” in the Paiute and Shoshone languages.

Four federally recognized tribes in Nevada — the Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe, Walker River Paiute Tribe, Lovelock Paiute Tribe, and Yomba Shoshone Tribe — support what would be Nevada’s fifth national monument. The site could be created either by a presidential proclamation or by law.
